The US House voted Tuesday to prevent a government shutdown after new Republican Speaker Mike Johnson reached across the aisle to Democrats when some conservatives revolted against his plan.

The bipartisan vote, 336-95, demonstrated Johnson’s readiness to cooperate with Democrats in order to maintain government operations temporarily.

This is the same political strategy that cost the previous House Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, his job only a few weeks prior.

“Making sure that government stays in operation is a matter of conscience for all of us. We owe that to the American people,” Johnson said at a news conference at the Capitol earlier Tuesday.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
