Former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, stated on Thursday that he would swiftly fire special counsel Jack Smith if he were to win the 2024 election.
Smith is currently prosecuting Trump on four charges related to an alleged conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results, centering on the events of January 6, 2021.
In an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt, Trump clarified that Smith’s tenure would be short-lived under a new Trump administration.

“Oh, it’s so easy. It’s so easy,” Trump said, referring to dismissing Smith. “In fact, he’s a crooked person.”
He also praised Judge Aileen Cannon, who had presided over a separate case involving Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents, calling her “brave” and “brilliant.”
Trump claimed that he had won the documents case and suggested he is on the path to winning the other legal battles he faces, mentioning that they have “immunity at the Supreme Court.” He reaffirmed his stance that Smith would be fired immediately if he regained office.

Smith first indicted Trump in June 2023 on 40 counts, including 31 alleged violations of the Espionage Act, accusing the former president of unlawfully storing classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence. However, Judge Cannon dismissed the case in mid-July, ruling that Smith’s appointment was unlawful.
Additionally, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on July 1 that sitting presidents are immune from criminal prosecution for official acts performed while in office, which Trump had cited in his defense.
Smith later filed a superseding indictment that removed certain charges and updated his argument, asserting that Trump acted beyond his official duties as president.
