Former President Trump defended his comments, on 2020 election fraud to DOJ officials after notes from a call in December were released on Friday by the House Oversight Committee.
On Friday, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, released handwritten notes taken by then-Acting Deputy Attorney General Richard P. Donoghue of a December 27, 2020, phone call with former President Donald J. Trump and former Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen.
Chairwoman Maloney issued the following statement:
“These handwritten notes show that President Trump directly instructed our nation’s top law enforcement agency to take steps to overturn a free and fair election in the final days of his presidency,” Chairwoman Maloney said.
Maloney said the Committee had begun scheduling interviews with key witnesses.
On Saturday, Trump defended those comments in the released notes, “The corrupt and highly partisan House Democrats who run the House Oversight Committee yesterday released documents—including court filings dealing with the rigged election of 2020—that they dishonestly described as attempting to overturn the election.”
“In fact, it is just the opposite,” Trump said in a statement.
“The documents were meant to uphold the integrity and honesty of elections and the sanctity of our vote,” said Trump
“The American People want, and demand, that the President of the United States, its chief law enforcement officer in the country, stand with them to fight for Election Integrity and to investigate attempts to undermine our nation,” Trump added.
Officials allegedly told Trump that DOJ could not investigate election fraud claims if there was no evidence of widespread election fraud, according to the notes in the documents.
Donoghue had allegedly told Trump there were “dozens of investigations, hundreds of interviews” conducted by the DOJ, and no evidence of widespread voter fraud was found in the 2020 election.
“Our country has just suffered an incredibly corrupt Presidential Election, and it is time for Congress and others to investigate how such corruption was allowed to take place rather than investigating those that are exposing this massive fraud on the American People,” said Trump’s statement.
