As you can see from the infographic below, road traffic accidents and fatalities are on the rise. So what can you do to reduce your chances of causing or being in an RTA?

It is important to remember that you are responsible for driving safely at all times; however, you cannot always predict what other drivers might do.

Reduce distractions

Do you regularly drive while listening to music, talking, seeing notifications popping up on your phone, and need the SatNav too?

While you’re driving it might not feel like ‘too much.’ but, it is a lot on paper. Before setting off make sure everything you need is within easy reach.

Red Light Runners

Some drivers will always try to beat the red light, and in doing so they can clip oncoming traffic – resulting in a disastrous pile-up. When your light goes green, before hitting the gas, count to three and ensure there are no red-light runners. If you are driving next to a large truck, it is easy not to see what’s coming, so take a moment to be vigilant.

Three Second Cushion

Between you and the car in front should be at least three seconds when driving at speed. This healthy gap allows you to break sharply should you need to and is safe for the other driver too.

Vehicles can appear ‘out of nowhere’ at high speeds, which leaves it to us, the safe drivers, to account for what might happen. Take it easy and always leave a little bit earlier than you need to – so you aren’t tempted to rush.
