A wave of retirements from the House has threatened the Republicans’ chances of holding onto their already slim majority.
However, one congressman reportedly opted to return to Washington after getting a personal appeal from former President Donald Trump.
According to the website Conservative Brief, Tennessee GOP Rep. Mark Green, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, rescinded his retirement announcement after Trump reached out.
Green, first elected in 2018, had said that he was set to head back home after fulfilling a pledge to pass a tough immigration bill, HR 2, which, unlike the current Senate package supported by President Joe Biden, actually does strengthen border security, and to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his dereliction of duty.
Yet he now will seek re-election in 2024.
“While my strong desire was to leave Congress at the end of this year, since my announcement, I have received countless calls from constituents, colleagues, and President Trump urging me to reconsider,” Green told The Tennessee Star.
“I was reminded of the words of General [Douglas] MacArthur on a statue at West Point: ‘Duty, honor, country.’ I realized, once again: I had a duty to my country to fulfill,” Green continued.

“I will be running for re-election so I can be here on Day 1 next year to help President Trump end this border crisis once and for all.”
Trump also had encouraged Green to return by recently issuing an endorsement of his re-election bid on Truth Social, Trump’s social media platform.
“Mark Green has had lots of options because of his political talents, and the great job he has done as a Congressman, but given the fantastic work he’s doing as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, I hope he runs for Re-Election to the U.S. House of Representatives. If he does, he has my Complete and Total Endorsement!” Trump said.
