HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – The Southwest Florida Water Management District (District) will be conducting controlled burns in the Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve and Chito Branch Reserve through September to mitigate the risk of uncontrolled wildfires.

The Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve, situated south of Cross Creek Boulevard between U.S. Highway 301 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, will see approximately 500 acres burned in controlled sections.

Chito Branch Reserve, located west of County Road 39 and east of Boyette Road, will have around 100 acres treated similarly.

Prescribed burns offer numerous benefits, including:

  • Reducing Overgrowth: Diminishing overgrown vegetation significantly decreases the potential for destructive wildfires.
  • Promoting New Growth: Fires encourage the growth of diverse plant species, enhancing the overall ecosystem health.
  • Maintaining Habitats: Prescribed burns help preserve the natural character and condition of wildlife habitats.
  • Ensuring Recreational Access: Controlled burns help maintain access to public recreational areas by managing vegetation.

The District manages prescribed burns on around 30,000 acres annually as part of its ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and public safety.
