The South Carolina Supreme Court has agreed to directly hear Alex Murdaugh’s appeal regarding alleged jury tampering in his murder trial, bypassing the usual Court of Appeals process.
This decision could potentially overturn a previous ruling denying Murdaugh a new trial.
Murdaugh’s legal team claims that former Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill improperly influenced the jury by making comments suggesting his guilt.

While a judge acknowledged Hill’s inappropriate behavior, he ruled that it didn’t affect the verdict.
Murdaugh’s lawyers argue that any such interference by a state official should be considered prejudicial, and the burden of proof shouldn’t be on the defendant to show how the verdict would have been different without it. Hill denies the allegations but has resigned and faces ethics charges.
Murdaugh was convicted last year of murdering his wife and son and is currently serving two life sentences.
Murdaugh is also appealing his federal sentence for financial crimes.
