Air pollution is one of the biggest problems in modern society, especially in busy cities with lots of traffic or businesses. Aside from air pollution contributing to global climate change, it can also be bad for the health of millions of residents.
Pollutants are abundant in the air, meaning we are breathing in potentially toxic chemicals all the time. Ironically, this is one of the reasons that some people in some countries were wearing face masks long before the pandemic; to protect themselves from air pollution.
Moreover, scientists have been working for years to come up with ways of making the outdoor air a lot cleaner. Various concepts have already been introduced, so let’s see what’s currently being done:
Green spaces in urban areas
The concept of creating green spaces in urban areas is one that’s met with a lot of applause from most people. The whole idea behind this is that the greenery acts to soak up some of the carbon emissions and pollutants in the air. As a bonus, more oxygen is also released, making the air a lot cleaner.
We are seeing some cities develop new outdoor parks, but we are also seeing things like green bus stops or green roofs. With a green roof, massive buildings are seeing grass planted on top of them, filled with bulk biochar to further enhance the soaking up of carbon emissions. Effectively, there are now gardens on top of skyscrapers, contributing to the fight against air pollution.
Ideas like these all revolve around basic science that we learned when we were kids. Plants take in CO2 and produce O2, the complete opposite of us. Adding more greenery to busy cities will definitely help the fight against climate change and air pollution.
Electric vehicles to reduce emissions
The second thing that scientists have worked super hard on over the years is creating electric vehicles with zero emissions. They have been around for a long time, but the technology behind these vehicles is still improving. It’s not just about creating cars that work well and run on electricity, it’s also about finding how to manufacture these cars with a smaller carbon footprint.
Nevertheless, if the world was full of electric cars, trucks, trains, etc. We would see significantly cleaner air across the globe. Certainly, in busy cities with loads of traffic, this technology could drastically lower the carbon emissions in the air, making it a lot cleaner and safer for people to breathe.
Alongside these two ideas, there are many others in the works. Shifting to renewable and clean energy sources – like solar and wind – can help to cut carbon emissions and clean up our air. You may also have recently seen that Dyson has introduced a new gadget that you wear on your face and it cleans the air for you. While this seems cool, it doesn’t really solve the problem as the air around us will still be polluted.
You should care about air pollution, particularly regarding your health. According to the WHO, 4.2 million premature deaths were caused by outdoor air pollution. It increases your chances of developing respiratory diseases, so it is something to think about. There are already plenty of ideas and solutions working to combat this, but we need to see more in the future!
