Now liberals find the Pledge of Allegiance objectionable.
On Wednesday, Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz got Democratic resistance to a measure to make saying the Pledge of Allegiance an opening act by the members of the House Judiciary Committee when the panel meets.
“Our Pledge of Allegiance is a symbol of national pride and unity,” Gaetz explained. He added that committee members could invite constituents to lead the Pledge.
Yet New York Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler opposed the plan, saying it was “unnecessary.” Lawmakers, he said, already say the Pledge before the whole House conducts its business.

Another Democrat, Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia, called it “ironic” that Republicans on the committee wanted to say the Pledge when they supported former President Donald Trump’s “big lie” about the 2020 election — although Johnson himself believed the bigger lie of Trump-Russia collusion hoax.
Meanwhile, GOP Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana offered clarification on Nadler.
“I’m not seeing Mr. Nadler on the [House] floor when the Pledge is done. And most members are not present, so it’s not accurate to say we do the Pledge every day, or participate in the Pledge every day. It may be offered but you’re not there for it.”
Eventually, Army Staff Sgt. Corey Beekman of Pensacola came forward to lead the committee in the Pledge.
In a video released by Gaetz’s office on Wednesday, Beekman said that to him patriotism is “men and women that have decided to write a check to the American people which is redeemable up to their entire lives.”

“We don’t get along, the left and right side of the aisle, but we need to remember we’re all Americans and get back to the core beliefs of what we were,” Beekman added.
In a statement to the Daily Caller later, Gaetz said of Nadler’s opposition: “Standing for the American flag isn’t controversial. Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance isn’t a waste of time. Democrats are so outraged at the idea of a daily dose of patriotism that they spent 30 minutes ranting and raving in opposition. Congress cannot expect the American people to believe they are fighting for their values when they don’t even care to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.”
Another Republican, North Carolina Rep. Dan Bishop, told the Daily Caller, “It’s absurd that Democrats on the committee don’t even want to say the Pledge of Allegiance. You would think it would be a simple request — not so for the Judiciary Democrats, who almost seemed allergic to reciting the pledge.”
