It is amazing the Declaration of Independence signers went untouched by the British Army while secretly working the document up in Philadelphia, but on July 2, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed and released on July 4, 1776.
But the beans were spilled by someone two months earlier about a Declaration of Independence being worked on in the Philadelphia Gazette on May 1 1776 for all to read! I can only figure the British were overconfident with themselves and laughing at a bunch of farmers and non-military type Colonists wanting to be independent of King George while facing the all-powerful British Army and Navy.
George Washington was already out in the field secretly training his men in 1775 and apparently, the British did not catch on to that scheme or the British would have been on their way in numbers for sure!
For eight years, a ragged ill-equipped Continental Army made up of farmers, fought the best equipped, most powerful, and largest Army on the face of the earth and won their freedom!
The tyrannical King of England and his army were defeated! Providence surely was on the side of the Colonists and when God is on your side evil cannot stand!
I researched this on July 1 2022 in newspaper archives. I extracted a section of the paper where I also extracted a section from that, where I boxed in the words “declaration of independence” in yellow.
