Former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi said Donald Trump’s lawsuit against Big Tech not only will go to the U.S. Supreme Court – it needs to go to the Supreme Court.
In an interview with Newsmax on Thursday, Bondi maintained Trump was standing up for everyday Americans who risk being shut down for not following the dominant leftist narrative.
“These platforms have their billions (of followers) worldwide, and they are controlling the 21st-century town hall. They’re controlling basically all of the information that comes out from all Americans throughout not only the states but the country,” said Bondi.
Bondi maintained that regular Americans are increasingly stifled by the tech moguls’ leftist inclinations. She cited, as one example, a Michigan school teacher whose Facebook page was shuttered for questioning whether 2-year-olds should be masked and the wisdom of quarantines.
“If they can censor President Trump, they can censor anything,” Bondi said. “If they’re pulling off a doctor who’s talking about COVID-19 today. Tomorrow, it’s going to be you.”
Trump sued Google, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube last month over the tech behemoths banning him from social media.
In a Wall Street Journal column in July, he called the collective clout of the companies “one of the gravest threats to our democracy today.” He said he was going after them because their hostile clampdown on conservative speech is unconstitutional, and that he was suing “to restore free speech for myself and for every American.”
“Through these lawsuits, I intend to restore free speech for all Americans—Democrats, Republicans and independents. I will never stop fighting to defend the constitutional rights and sacred liberties of the American people,” Trump wrote.
In her interview, Bondi also discussed Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, which grants tech firms legal immunity for censoring over-the-top comments. The federal law was intended to empower tech monitors to stop the flow of material by pedophiles and child predators, Bondi said.
Today, though, “It’s really evolved in their minds into a full-blown immunity for them where they can violate the First Amendment,” said Bondi.
“That’s the most important constitutional amendment, in my mind, we have. And the Supreme Court has also ruled on how important the First Amendment is. And what they’re doing, they just can’t get away with and that’s why this case is so important.”
Bondi has joined other backers of the 45th president at the America First Policy Institute, where she serves as chairwoman for constitutional litigation.
Bondi noted the group has gathered stories from 65,000 people across the political spectrum who are concerned about the influence of Big Tech.
