As President Joe Biden’s America continues to be plagued by mass shootings, the president himself and his Democratic colleagues believe gun control is a winning issue for them, as well as a distraction from all the other problems they have caused or refuse to address, such as inflation, lawlessness in our streets, out of control illegal immigration, or teachers who groom.

But they may want to consider that more closely after the example of a New York Republican congressman.

In late May, Rep. Chris Jacobs, whose district includes part of the Buffalo area, came out in favor of several gun control measures.

They included a ban on military-style rifles, raising the age of gun purchases to 21, and limiting magazines to no more than 10 rounds.

“I want to be completely transparent of where I am in Congress. If an assault weapons ban bill came to the floor that would ban something like an AR-15, I would vote for it,” Jacobs said.

As it turned out, Biden called for everything Jacobs said he would support in a speech given a few days after the congressman made his remarks.

Yet it seems Jacobs isn’t sticking around to make his voice heard on this issue.

CBS News reported on Friday that Jacobs, who was considered an “easy favorite” to win his largely rural upstate New York district, had announced he was leaving Congress “amid backlash over his support for new gun control measures.”

“I truly believe I could win this election, but it would be an incredibly divisive election for the Republican party and the people of the 23rd District,” he told reporters at a press conference.

“The last thing we need is an incredibly negative, half-truth-filled media attack funded by millions of special interest money coming into our community around this issue of gun violence and gun control.”

CBS continued, “The response from Republicans across the board was unambiguous. Since he made the announcement, Jacobs told the Buffalo News that ‘every Republican elected (official) that had endorsed me withdrew their endorsement. Party officials that supported me withdrew, most of them, and those that were going to said they would not. And so, obviously, this was not well received by the Republican base.’”

CBS quoted Gerard Kassar, chairman of the New York State Conservative Party, who said Jacobs’ “recent stance on Second Amendment rights, a position well outside the mainstream of the Republican Party, the Conservative Party, and the voters of NY [District] 23.”

“We agree that it’s the best interest of all three — and of Congressman Jacobs himself — that he forgoes a run for reelection and returns to civilian life. We wish him only the best in his future endeavors,” Kassar added.

As PJ Media columnist Matt Margolis noted Saturday, Jacobs had been “ considered a shoo-in for reelection before the comments. Biden clearly doesn’t realize that there are people as passionate about gun rights as they are about gun control, and his pathetic effort to make the midterms about gun control won’t save his party.”
