Left-wing California Gov. Gavin Newsom has had a “be careful what you wish for moment.” Three years ago, Newsom signed a bill creating a task force to study paying reparations for slavery to black residents — even though California was never a slave state.

Last weekend, the fruits of that labor became known. The task force delivered a proposal to pay some black residents up to $1.2 million, which was part of an overall reparations package expected to run California taxpayers $800 billion, if the Democratic-dominated state legislature approved the plan.

The task force saddled Newsom with the massive bill as some analysts predict Califorina’s budget deficit could hit $30 billion as the legislature finalizes the 2024 spending plan this summer.

In response, Newsom, who has repeatedly attacked Florida Republican Gov. Ron Desantis and has been touted as a possible 2024 presidential candidate, this week declined to get with the program demanded by his own party of leftists generally.

“The Reparations Task Force’s independent findings and recommendations are a milestone in our bipartisan effort to advance justice and promote healing. This has been an important process, and we should continue to work as a nation to reconcile our original sin of slavery and understand how that history has shaped our country,” Newsom told Fox News in a statement.

“Dealing with that legacy is about much more than cash payments. Many of the recommendations put forward by the Task Force are critical action items we’ve already been hard at work addressing: breaking down barriers to vote, bolstering resources to address hate, enacting sweeping law enforcement and justice reforms to build trust and safety, strengthening economic mobility — all while investing billions to root out disparities and improve equity in housing, education, healthcare, and well beyond. This work must continue,” he added.

“Following the Task Force’s submission of its final report this summer, I look forward to a continued partnership with the Legislature to advance systemic changes that ensure an inclusive and equitable future for all Californians,” Newsom concluded.

Newsom’s lukewarm response did not go unnoticed. And his spokesman tried to rescue the governor from his own words.

A reporter, citing his interview with Newsom spokesman Anthony York on Wednesday, tweeted, “Gov. Newsom is *not* backing away from cash payments, but wants to wait for the report in its entirety to arrive on his desk before he makes any decision. The $ payments matter ‘will be resolved’ only after Newsom meets with legislative leaders in the coming months.”

“To be crystal clear, per York: Gov. @GavinNewsom is ‘*not* ruling anything out’ at this time.”

Newsom has already run into trouble from his left.

Politico quoted the Rev. Amos Brown, a civil rights activist and the vice chairman of Newsom’s own reparations task force.

“We’re being disingenuous when we all of a sudden want to run away from money,” Brown said.
