In a joint operation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) New York City field office and the FBI’s Gang Task Force arrested Melvin Orlando Hernandez Villanueva, a 27-year-old Salvadoran national, on June 20th.

Hernandez Villanueva is suspected of being a member of the notorious MS-13 gang and was wanted in El Salvador on two counts of aggravated homicide and participation in a criminal organization.

“This violent criminal and MS-13 gang member erroneously thought he could escape murder charges in El Salvador by sneaking into the United States and hiding out in New York City,” said ERO New York City Field Office Director Kenneth Genalo. “We will apprehend these international fugitives and repatriate them to their countries of origin to face justice. I am grateful for the courageous efforts and outstanding teamwork between my officers and our law enforcement partners for safely removing this dangerous individual from the community.”

Authorities apprehended Hernandez Villanueva near his residence in Queens, New York, following a tip and confirmation of an Interpol Red Notice issued for his arrest. The Red Notice is a global alert system used by law enforcement to identify wanted individuals.

According to ICE officials, Hernandez Villanueva is believed to have entered the United States illegally. During the arrest, officers also recovered a loaded handgun, ammunition, and a small amount of marijuana.

Hernandez Villanueva is currently in federal immigration custody awaiting a hearing before an immigration judge. He faces potential deportation to El Salvador, where he will be turned over to Salvadoran authorities to face murder charges.

The MS-13 gang, also known as Mara Salvatrucha, is a transnational criminal organization notorious for its violence and brutality. The gang has a significant presence in El Salvador and has established a foothold in various U.S. cities. This arrest highlights the ongoing collaboration between U.S. law enforcement agencies to combat transnational criminal activity and protect communities.
