On Thursday, a New York appeals court denied Donald Trump’s request to lift a gag order in his hush money criminal case. Trump, the former Republican president, argued that his May conviction should be considered a “change in circumstances” warranting the removal of the restrictions.
A five-judge panel in the state’s mid-level appellate court upheld trial judge Juan M. Merchan’s decision to extend parts of the gag order until Trump is sentenced. The judges emphasized that “the fair administration of justice necessarily includes sentencing.”

This ruling followed an attempt by Trump’s lawyers to file papers requesting the immediate lifting of the gag order. The appellate court rejected the filing, which described the restrictions as an “unconstitutional, election-interfering” limitation on Trump’s free speech.
Trump’s lawyers noted that Vice President Kamala Harris’ entry into the presidential race added urgency to the matter, portraying herself as an ex-prosecutor challenging a “convicted felon.”
