Deion Nance, a 28-year-old man from Essex County, admitted guilt today to a string of armed robberies, a carjacking, and related firearms offenses, according to U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.
Violent Crime Spree
Nance’s guilty plea comes after he confessed to a series of crimes committed in late 2020 and early 2021. The charges against him include:
- Using a firearm to steal a 2016 Toyota Corolla on December 30th, 2020. He threatened the victim with a handgun, forced them out of the vehicle, and drove away.
- Robbing two restaurants on January 4th, 2021. He brandished a loaded firearm at an employee in the first restaurant, stealing $176. He attempted a similar robbery at a different restaurant later that day.

Federal Charges
Nance faces federal charges due to his use of firearms during these crimes. The charges include:
- Two counts of Hobbs Act robbery, a federal law prohibiting robberies that affect interstate commerce.
- One count of carjacking.
- Two counts of using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
These charges carry significant potential penalties.

- The carjacking charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
- Each Hobbs Act robbery charge is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
- The firearms offenses carry a maximum sentence of life in prison, with a mandatory minimum sentence of five years to be served consecutively to other prison terms.
Nance is scheduled for sentencing on October 29th, 2024. He also faces potential fines of up to $250,000, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense, whichever is greater.
