Firebrand Republican freshman Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene maintains that she is fighting “tyranny” by refusing to abide by House rules mandating mask
Firebrand Republican freshman Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene maintains that she is fighting “tyranny” by refusing to abide by House rules mandating masks.
The Georgia Republican noted she has racked up more than $25,000 in fines from Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s crackdown, which was implemented in January.
“I have over $25,000 in mask fines bc [because] I refuse to wear a mask in the chamber where over 80% of Congress is vaccinated and I’m NOT sick,” Greene tweeted on Saturday.
“As a Congresswoman, if I don’t stand up against tyranny & suffer consequences, then how can others?”
Greene issued the tweet to highlight a story out of Las Vegas, where parents have sued the county school district for $200 million in damages because of a mask mandate for students.
According to the Las Vegas Sun, 14 plaintiffs, who have a combined total of 18 children, sued the Clark County School Board and Superintendent Jesus Jara in federal court last month for “blatantly and maliciously” violating the Constitution with the mask mandate.
The parents argue that their children “have constitutionally protected interests in the benefits that come from them not being subject to the Board’s mask mandate, including the ability to pursue an education without being subjected to health risks that are not offset by any scientifically provable benefits.”
The lawsuit also maintained that the board and the superintendent committed felony threats “to injure a person” because masks have been “scientifically proven” to cause physical and mental harm, the Sun reports.
They cite a German survey involving almost 26,000 children that found 68 percent of them suffer side effects from prolonged mask-wearing, including irritability, headaches, difficulty concentrating, more unhappiness, expressing reluctance to go to school, “malaise,” impaired learning, and drowsiness.
Meanwhile, back in July, Greene and GOP Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Ralph Norman of South Carolina sued Pelosi over the fines.
The lawmakers argue that the fines are illegal because their payments are docked from their pay and the Constitution says members of Congress must vote on any changes to their salaries. They also argue that not wearing a mask does not constitute “disorderly conduct” for which lawmakers can be punished.
Greene herself has called Pelosi’s mask policy “discrimination” against those who refuse both masks and vaccines.
