U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) sent a letter Friday to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, demanding explanations for the U.S. Secret Service’s flawed security measures at former President Donald Trump’s July 13 rally.

This follows revelations from multiple whistleblowers who provided disturbing information about the assassination attempt on the former president.

“Whistleblowers with direct knowledge of the event have approached my office. According to the allegations, the July 13 rally was considered a ‘loose’ security event,” Senator Hawley wrote.

“For instance, detection canines were not used to monitor entry and detect threats as usual. Individuals without proper designations gained access to backstage areas. Additionally, Department personnel did not appropriately police the security buffer around the podium and were not stationed at regular intervals around the event’s security perimeter,” he continued.

Senator Hawley, a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which oversees Secretary Mayorkas’ DHS, has been vocal in demanding accountability.

Following the assassination attempt, Senator Hawley called for a comprehensive, transparent investigation by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, including sworn testimony from DHS and Secret Service officials. This investigation was confirmed this week and will feature public testimony from agency leadership.

Earlier this week, Senator Hawley established a whistleblower tip line within his office, pledging to protect the anonymity of those who come forward to shed light on the security breach on July 13.

Senator Hawley has also sent additional oversight letters—one to the DHS Inspector General and another to BlackRock’s CEO—requesting all records related to the significant security failures on July 13.
