Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced Thursday that he will recommend resentencing for Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were convicted of murdering their parents in 1989. This decision could potentially pave the way for their release after serving 34 years in prison.
The brothers, who were sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1996, have gained renewed attention in recent years due to television series and documentaries that highlighted allegations of sexual abuse by their father, Jose Menendez. This abuse was not fully considered as a mitigating factor during their original trial.

While Gascón’s recommendation is a significant step, it will require court approval for the resentencing to proceed.
The 1989 Murders
Lyle and Erik Menendez admitted to killing their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home. They claimed they acted out of fear, believing their parents were about to kill them to prevent the disclosure of years of sexual abuse suffered by Erik.
Family Plea for Release
The brothers’ extended family has been vocal in their support, arguing that the brothers deserve freedom after decades of incarceration. They believe that with increased awareness of the impact of sexual abuse, the brothers would not have received the same harsh sentence today.
This development marks a potential turning point in a case that has captivated public attention for decades. The final decision on whether the Menendez brothers will be resentenced now rests with the court.
