It’s no secret that the cost of living is increasing year after year. Combined with inflation, it means that everything costs a lot more than it used to. For many avid travelers, it’s meant that sacrifices have to be made. People are unable to travel as often as they used to because it’s simply too expensive. Even worse, some individuals and families are canceling summer vacations because it’s just too costly.

Thankfully there is some hope on the horizon. It’s possible to still travel, but spend less money in today’s rough economic climate. Some alterations may need to be made, and here’s how you can save a lot of money:

Book your flights in advance

Spontaneous trips are nice, but they are also very expensive. The best way to get a good deal on your flights is to book them months in advance. Most airlines will release flights a good nine months before they’re due to depart. The closer it gets to the departure, the more expensive the flights will be. Why? Because more seats are booked up, there’s less chance of getting a ticket. Book early and you can literally save hundreds of dollars.

Opt for short weekend getaways

Instead of traveling for many days at a time, consider only going away for a weekend. Now, this might not seem like you get to experience much, but there’s loads you can do. The trick is to book the earliest flight possible on the way out, then the latest when you return. This allows you to get all of Saturday and all of Sunday to be a tourist. But, you only have to book one night of accommodation, saving lots of money. If you’re worried about bringing your bags around with you on the second day, you can easily find luggage storage locations in most tourist destinations. A lot of train stations have these, and hotels will also hold your luggage if you ask them.

Travel at unpopular times

Avoid traveling during peak travel seasons. Mostly, these seasons coincide with school holidays. As such, most people travel between June – September. It’s also common to see lots of travelers booking vacations from December to January and at Easter. If you book at unpopular times – like March or October – everything is much cheaper. Flights cost less money, hotels are way more affordable; it makes so much more sense and you can save an utter fortune.

Put all three of these ideas together and you will be able to travel for less in today’s economic climate. The cost of everything continues to rise and shows no sign of slowing down. However, this doesn’t mean you should avoid doing things for your own enjoyment. Travel is one of the few things in life that can make you feel happy and whole. It’s sad to think that you’re unable to travel to different places because of the economic situation. If you make a few changes and sacrifices, it is entirely possible to go on vacation without spending a lot of money.
