HERNANDO COUNTY, FL. – Hernando County Emergency Management continues to monitor Tropical Storm Elsa. Government leaders are assessing current and forecasted conditions to determine the need for additional emergency protective measures.

PROCLAMATION NO. 2021-09, Declaration of State of Local Emergency, has been enacted by the Hernando County Executive Policy Group.

This declaration provides Hernando County Government the authority to take action as needed to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of our community.

This includes making emergency purchases, obtain additional resources, renting equipment, hiring workers, utilizing volunteers, etc. The Local State of Emergency will be in effect for seven days, or until rescinded.

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will transition to Level 2 partial activation beginning at 10 a.m. this morning.

Voluntary Evacuations and Shelter Information A voluntary evacuation order for coastal zone A, mobile homes, low-lying and flood-prone areas countywide has been issued.

A general population, special needs, and pet-friendly shelter will open beginning at 9 a.m., Tuesday, July 6, 2021 for residents in these zones at the Enrichment Center located at 800 John Gary Grubbs Boulevard in Brooksville. Visit https://bit.ly/2JYEKGN to find the location of your zone.

Tips for shelter residents

  • Bring identification
  • Eat prior to arrival. The first meal will be dinner
  • Bring air mattress or sleeping bag, cots will not be provided for general population
  • Bring medicines, blanket/sheet, snacks, water and personal hygiene products
  • Call the special needs registry at (352) 754-4083 to request transportation
  • Make every effort to carpool due to limited parking

Sandbags

A limited supply of sand and sandbags will be available through Tuesday, July 6, 2021 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the following location. This self-serve sandbag site will be remain open until weather conditions begin to deteriorate. Please bring your own shovel.

Tips on how to properly fill and stack your sandbags

  • Fill bags one-half to two-thirds of the way full
  • Over-filled bags will result in a leaky sandbag wall
  • Stack sandbags so that the seams between the bags are staggered
  • Tuck the top of each bag under to ensure that that bag is sealed by its own weight
