TAMPA, Fla. – Sean Atkins’ four-yard catch on the first play from scrimmage against visiting UAB on Saturday afternoon was the 154th of his career to set a USF record. He entered the game with 153 receptions and tied with Andre Davis (2011-14).

The reception also gave Atkins 1,731 career receiving yards to move within one yard of Xavier Weaver (2019-22), who is fourth all-time. Tyre McCants (2015-18) is third with 1,856 yards. Davis leads the way with 2,136 yards, and Rodney Adams (2014-16) is second with 1,967.

Atkins walked on under Charlie Strong in 2019 and earned a full scholarship prior to the 2021 season under Jeff Scott. The Viera, Fla. native had 10 receptions for 94 yards in his first three seasons before he was utilized more frequently in 2022 when he caught 19 passes for 238 yards and the first three touchdowns of his career.

Atkins has not only flourished in two seasons under coach Alex Golesh, but has been one of the nation’s top receivers. Last year, he set USF single-season marks for receptions (92) and receiving yards (1,034) and his seven TD catches are second-most in a season. The 5-foot-10 Atkins, who was on the Biletnikoff Award (nation’s top receiver) preseason watch list, entered Saturday’s game with 32 receptions.
