A Florida woman has been charged with the murder of her ex-girlfriend, who was previously reported missing by concerned family members.
Through the detective’s investigative efforts, Shannon Lee McCarthy, 43, was identified as the suspect and subsequently arrested on July 18, 2023, for murder.
On Monday, July 3, 2023, just after 12:30 p.m., Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers responded to the 5300 block of Timuquana Road about a missing person.

The victim, Heather Sheppard, had been reported missing by her family, who became concerned for her safety.
On Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at 3:15 p.m., the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Missing Person detectives conducted a follow-up investigation on the 5300 block of Colonial Avenue.
During their investigation, human remains located in an advanced state of decomposition were located on the front porch of McCarthy’s home.
As a result of this finding, the Homicide Team and Crime Scene Units responded and began assisting in the investigation.

Following an autopsy, the remains were identified as those of missing Heather Sheppard, according to officials.
Authorities arrested McCarthy on Tuesday, and she is being held in the Duval County Jail on a no-bond status.
