Sheriff Deputies arriving at the scene of a crash involving an overturned truck on Friday were shocked to find that the victims were two alligators, captured by the teenage driver of a truck and a friend, who were fishing earlier that morning.
Deputies called Florida Fish and Wildlife to assist the alligators.
“When our officer was asked to assist with a vehicle accident involving two people and two alligators, he wasn’t sure what to expect,” said Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.
“Once on scene, he (FWC Officer) saw a 6 ½ -foot and 8-foot-long alligator hanging from the rear window of an SUV resting on its side,” said Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.
The officer immediately removed the gators from the vehicle and, just to be safe, secured their mouths using electrical tape.
After interviewing the individuals, one of them finally admitted to killing the alligators while fishing, and then both suspects loaded the gators into the SUV for transport.
Deputies arrested the uninjured driver, 18, and his passenger, 17, and charging them with misdemeanors for taking alligators without a permit.
Both alligators died, unfortunately, according to FWC.
Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and we will update this story when more details are released.
