In his October 17, 2024, op-ed for the Miami Herald, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) highlights the growing threat posed by Chinese telecom giant Huawei, accusing the company of striving for global domination of the wireless market on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party.

Rubio first raised concerns in 2018, emphasizing Huawei’s role as a tool of Chinese state influence through subsidization, enabling it to expand despite international efforts to curb its power. Rubio warns against Huawei’s 5G technology, urging regional partners to reject its predatory tactics and seek alternatives.

Rubio underscores that Huawei’s dominance is not due to innovation or competitiveness but rather heavy subsidies from Beijing. He stresses the national security risks of allowing Huawei to control global communications infrastructure, warning that the company is more than a business entity; it is an instrument of Chinese geopolitical influence, akin to its defense and intelligence apparatus.

“Its primary goal was and remains, the domination of the global wireless market on Beijing’s behalf, combined with the expansion of the Chinese Communist Party’s ability to spy on and disrupt other countries’ communications,” wrote Rubio.

Rubio also noted the efforts of President Trump, who was the first to recognize and combat Huawei’s threat. Since then, over 60 countries and 200 telecom companies have joined the “Clean Network” alliance to halt Huawei’s monopolization efforts.

However, Huawei’s continued expansion into new businesses despite these efforts demonstrates its dependence on China’s financial backing.

In the context of Latin America, Rubio urges leaders to resist Huawei’s 5G offers, warning that allowing Huawei’s involvement will enable the Chinese government to infiltrate and manipulate communications infrastructure in free nations.

He advocates for the U.S. and its partners to support reliable alternatives and ensure regional security is not compromised by Huawei’s ambitions.
