The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has reported the death of a 2-year-old female Florida panther. The panther’s remains were found on Corkscrew Road in Collier County on November 8th, and it is suspected that she was struck by a vehicle.

Sadly, vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death for Florida panthers. This incident serves as a reminder for motorists to be vigilant, especially in panther zones where these endangered animals are known to cross roads.

The FWC encourages drivers to:

  • Slow down and observe posted speed limits, particularly in panther zones.
  • Be extra cautious when driving at dawn and dusk, as these are times when panthers are most active.
  • Report injured or dead panthers to the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).

Florida residents can help protect panthers by purchasing a “Protect the Panther” license plate. The fees from these plates fund critical research and management efforts for this endangered species.
