A Florida man is behind bars after attempting to meet a 15-year-old child for sex and ended up meeting a deputy instead.
On August 9, 2022, Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Major Crimes Detective Jordyn Batts arrested 25-year-old Troy Odom for Traveling to Meet a Minor for Sexual Conduct and Unlawful Use of a Two-Way Communication Device to Facilitate a Felony.
The previous day, August 8, 2022, a parent contacted deputies and told them that her juvenile daughter had been contacted by Odom on Snapchat and she was concerned.
Through an investigation, it was revealed that Odom was a 25-year-old from Hawthorne, Florida and he knew the person he contacted was 15 years old.
At this time, an undercover MCSO detective began messaging Odom, who believed he was still speaking with the child.
While speaking with the undercover detective, Odom sent sexually explicit messages that graphically described the sexual acts he hoped to perform and stated he wanted to meet with the child.
Odom then traveled from Hawthorne to a predetermined location in Ft. McCoy, where he was apprehended by multiple MCSO units.
During an interview, Odom admitted to traveling from Hawthorne to Ft. McCoy with the intention of having sex with a child.

Odom was placed under arrest and transported to the Marion County Jail.
“Parents, please be aware of what your children are doing and who they are speaking to on social media! Kudos to this mother, who noticed someone was speaking with her underage child and took steps to contact MCSO. This type of vigilance helps us keep your children safe and bring those who want to take advantage of them to justice,” said MCSO.
