CLEARWATER, Fla. – Clearwater Police detectives have charged a 39-year-old man with armed robbery in connection with a crime that occurred in January.
Jason Morris, 39, was arrested Tuesday night and booked in to the Pinellas County Jail.
Detectives say he was the suspect who wore an oversized suit to rob the Wells Fargo at 2699 Gulf-to-Bay Blvd. on Jan. 27. He implied he had a gun, demanded cash from the teller, and then left the area on foot.
Investigators were able to recover the suit and bag he had the money in from two nearby trash containers, and the DNA on those items matched that of Morris. They also were able to determine that he bought the suit at a local thrift store and used a clothing voucher with his name on it. Additionally, he was seen on video taking a bus to the scene of the crime.
Because he is a transient who moves around Pinellas County, it was a challenge to locate him.
“Our detectives did an amazing job of collecting evidence and building a case against the suspect,” said Chief Dan Slaughter. “It was just a matter of time before we were able to track him down.”
