A 50-year-old Florida man was arrested Wednesday evening on Stock Island following an alleged attack on a man holding a sign displaying a Bible verse.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reported that Jerome Hernandez, 50, of Key West, assaulted the 37-year-old victim, who was holding a sign with the Bible verse John 3:16, around 6:35 p.m. on Maloney Avenue.

Hernandez reportedly punched and kicked the victim and also attempted to steal the sign.

Hernandez now faces charges of battery, disorderly intoxication, disturbing the peace, and robbery. Fortunately, the victim did not sustain any life-threatening injuries.
