Anglers along the Florida Gulf Coast can breathe a sigh of relief as the latest reports show no signs of red tide. With clear waters and favorable weather in many areas, it’s a great time to get out on the water.

What’s Biting:

Inshore: Redfish are active and feeding aggressively, especially around docks, mangroves, and oyster bars. Live bait like shrimp or pinfish is a top choice, but cut bait and artificial lures are also producing good results.

Snook season reopens on September 1st, so get ready to target these prized fish in the coming weeks. Trout fishing remains steady, particularly in grassy flats and deeper channels. Look for them around structures and use live shrimp or soft plastic jigs.

Nearshore: Spanish mackerel are providing plenty of action for anglers trolling or casting near reefs and artificial structures.

Keep an eye out for diving birds, which can indicate schools of baitfish and hungry mackerel. Kingfish and cobia are also possibilities, especially for those venturing a bit further offshore.

Offshore: The red snapper season is coming to a close on August 28th, so this is your last chance to reel in these delicious bottom dwellers.

Grouper fishing remains good, with gag grouper being a popular target. Live bait or large jigs worked near bottom structures are the keys to success. Pelagic species like mahi-mahi and tuna are also possibilities for those heading further offshore.

Tips & Reminders:

  • Check local regulations: Always familiarize yourself with the latest fishing regulations, including size and bag limits, before heading out.
  • Stay hydrated: It’s hot out there, so be sure to drink plenty of water and protect yourself from the sun.
  • Respect the resource: Practice catch-and-release whenever possible, especially for undersized or over-the-limit fish.

Overall, fishing conditions along the Florida Gulf Coast are looking good. Get out there and enjoy the beautiful weather and productive fishing!
