Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday praised House Republicans for making aid for Israel a stand-alone expenditure.
“The House is right on this,” DeSantis told Fox News host Neil Cavuto, saying conservative lawmakers were correct to reject an overarching package that lumped Israel in with Ukraine.
“What they’re doing to provide robust support for Israel while also paying for it is the way to go.”
DeSantis commented on the House GOP proposal, which would provide $14.3 billion in aid to Israel while gutting funding for the IRS by $14.5 billion to cover the cost.

President Joe Biden and the Democrats have already panned the idea because it severs help for Ukraine.
Yet that position also calls into question how urgently Democrats want to help Israel in the wake of the Hamas terrorist attacks that killed more than 1,400 Israelis and at least 33 Americans.
White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre had said on Monday that “politicizing our national security interests is a nonstarter,” although it’s difficult to see how America’s security interests are supported by offering aid to either Israel or Ukraine.
“Israel is a great ally of ours,” DeSantis told Cavuto. “We’re going to support their right to defend themselves. We have a longstanding military relationship. We will continue providing them support so that they can fight and win this war. We should all agree on that.”
However, DeSantis added, “We’re also $33-plus trillion in debt. So when you’re supporting Israel, which we should do, I think what the House did — to say, ‘Let’s pare back in other areas’ — that represents sound judgment.”
“That’s what the Congress should be doing when these things happen, as a matter of course,” he continued.
If Congress can get this done as Republicans advocate, said DeSantis, “I think the American people will actually be impressed for a change — to see Congress actually making decisions, actually having to set priorities, and helping an ally while at the same time not continuing to bankrupt this country.”
