Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued an executive order extending the assignment of Miami-Dade County State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle in an election-law investigation of state Rep. Anika Omphroy, D-Lauderdale Lakes.
DeSantis issued the extension last week, after Fernandez Rundle “advised the governor that the duties required by the previous executive assignment have not yet been completed as the case is still pending,” the executive order said.
DeSantis appointed Fernandez Rundle in May 2021, after Broward County State Attorney Harold Pryor disqualified himself. Pryor told DeSantis that he had met Omphroy on the campaign trail and that she had contributed to his campaign, according to the 2021 order appointing Fernandez Rundle.
That order said the probe involved allegations that Omphroy had violated the Florida Election Code, though it did not provide details.
The order issued last week extended Fernandez Rundle’s assignment to May 12, 2023. Omphroy, who was first elected to the House in 2018, has opened a campaign account to run for re-election this year but has not filed finance reports since December, according to the state Division of Elections website.
