A University of Virginia football player from South Florida was one of three people killed in a shooting on the campus Sunday, according to University President Jim Ryan.
D’Sean Perry, originally from Miami, was identified as a victim at a news conference Monday, in Washington, D.C.
Perry played linebacker, defensive line, and tight end at Gulliver Prep for head coach Earl Sims and was named the South Florida Conference’s 2018 Defensive Player of the Year.
As a junior Perry made 53 tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks, and recovered a fumble.
Perry was on Team USA U19 and appeared in the International Bowl in Dallas, Texas.
The other two victims, Devin Chandler and Lavel Davis Jr., also played for the school’s football team, according to University Of Virginia President Jim Ryan.
Ryan said counseling and psychological services would be made available to students. Classes were canceled Monday.
The 22-year-old man accused of killing the three victims and wounding two others at the University of Virginia is now in custody.
Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., 22, was the target of a police manhunt that shut down the U-Va. campus in Charlottesville for nearly 12 hours.
Police did not give further information about where Jones was taken into custody or the agency involved in his arrest.
