Colorado Republican Sues The State To Be Identified On Election Ballot As “Let’s Go Brandon”

The “Let’s Go Brandon” phenomenon may have subsided a bit, but it’s still very much alive. Colorado explains how.

Colorado state Rep. Dave Williams, a Republican, is challenging Republican U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn for his congressional seat in the state’s June primary.

According to The Washington Times, Williams on Monday sued Secretary of State Jena Griswold after she denied his pitch to have his name appear on the ballot as Dave “Let’s Go Brandon” Williams.

Griswold maintained that the LGB quote is a slogan and not a nickname, which under state law can appear on a ballot.

But Williams disputes this.

“There are only two requirements: that the nickname be used regularly, and that it not include the name of a political party,” Williams told the Times. And he asserts that he regularly uses “Let’s Go Brandon” as part of his name.

The Times noted that “Let’s Go Brandon” appears on Williams’ social media accounts. Radio and podcast hosts also have introduced the lawmaker using “Let’s Go Brandon” with his name.

“The other thing I would point out is that state law does not grant the power or the authority to the Secretary of State to determine what is acceptable and not acceptable,” Williams told the Times.

The paper pointed out that just last year a local school board candidate was allowed to have his name displayed on the ballot as Blake “No Mandates” Law.

In his lawsuit, Williams added, “The Secretary’s ‘slogan’ standard is inconsistent with her former guidance, in which she allowed nicknames that could be construed as a ‘slogan.’”

In a tweet on Monday, Williams said, “We’re suing the corrupt Democrat Secretary of State @JenaGriswold. Like @JoeBiden, Griswold needs to learn she can’t push her radical agenda on us or violate the rule of law. Help us stop her & get #LetsGoBrandon on the ballot! #MAGA.”

“Let’s Go Brandon” took off last October after a crowd at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama chanted “F–k Joe Biden” as NASCAR driver Brandon Brown celebrated his first career win.

NBC Sports reporter Kelli Stavast told Brown during an interview, “As you can hear the chants from the crowd, ‘Let’s go Brandon.’”

Since then the phrase has become a rallying cry for conservatives, who use it as a family-friendly alternative to show their contempt for the Democratic president.
