University athletic coaches will be shielded from liability if they take actions that affect athletes’ ability to earn money, under a revised regulation approved Wednesday by the state university system’s Board of Governors.

The change stems from a bill (HB 7B) that the Legislature and Gov. Ron DeSantis approved in February.

The bill revamped Florida’s name, image, and likeness law, which allows collegiate athletes to earn compensation.

Under the revised regulation, coaches and other university employees could not be held liable for “any damages” to an athlete’s ability to earn money “resulting from decisions and actions routinely taken in the course” of intercollegiate athletics.

The law and regulation change also involves an update to required coursework for athletes.

Universities must conduct at least two financial-literacy, life skills, and entrepreneurship workshops for athletes before graduation.
