Depending on which poll one reads, President Joe Biden’s approval rating has stagnated between 36 percent and 42 percent for nearly nine months.
His current popularity not only shows a sharp contrast from the days when Biden boasted about receiving the most votes in history – 81 million – to defeat former President Donald Trump, it also is predicted to be a drag on congressional Democrats in the fall elections.
But we learned recently that there is one more person Biden’s wilting favorability is affecting:
First lady Jill Biden.
On Friday, Politico posted a story about how Biden is “dulling down” the White House beat for the media, which is finding its work a “bore.”
Biden and his handlers apparently don’t make things exciting enough for the media despite the fact that Fox News’ Peter Doocy routinely grills its spokespeople about their lies, contradictions, and hypocrisy, and despite the fact that the nation, under Biden, is at historic levels of inflation, historic levels of illegal immigration, fighting a proxy war in Ukraine, possibly sliding into recession, watching as the federal government is sued by red states on a daily basis over some issue or another, and moves closer to an actual, rather than rhetorical, split because Biden is fueling the divide with a leftist social agenda.
One might think the fact that Biden is allowing the Department of Homeland Security to create its own Ministry of Truth would rouse these somnolent guardians of democracy to action. But no, there is a “new sense of sobriety” among reporters, as one source told Politico, as Biden is the equivalent of a “journalistic sedative.’
But then we get to Jill, who has insisted on being called “doctor” despite the fact that she has a PhD in education and is not a medical doctor.
Buried in that Politico piece was this nugget of news:
“NPD BookScan, which tracks book sales in the U.S., said that prominent books about Trump released in his first two years of office outsold Biden books during his first year and a half by, what an official there said was, ‘essentially 10:1.’ A newly released biography about Jill Biden, by two well-respected Associated Press journalists, sold just 250 units in its first week, according to the company.”
The book in question is “Jill: A Biography of the First Lady,” by AP reporters Julie Pace and Darlene Superville.
According to the publisher’s website, “Jill” tells the story of a professor who “earned a doctorate in educational leadership, and taught at Northern Virginia Community College,” who also “broke barriers as First Lady as the first to hold a paying job outside the White House.” It is, the firm says, “the story of this accomplished American woman.”
The authors’ “deeply reported biography” helps the public “better understand her personality, which has held the Biden family together through tragedy and good fortune alike.”
But then just 250 people were interested in that story.
Perhaps Biden is so good at boring people that the book market is essentially an extension of the White House press corps.
Or Perhaps as we survey the state of the nation, the book market for “Jill” reminds us of former President Barack Obama’s infamous words: “Don’t underestimate Joe’s ability to f–k things up.”
Or perhaps Jill might have drawn more attention if she were, say, an international supermodel who spoke five different languages like the last first lady.
