Backers of Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis unleashed a new ad attacking former President Donald Trump for one promise that defined Trump’s winning 2016 presidential campaign: prosecuting Hillary Clinton.
The DeSantis-supporting super PAC Never Back Down released the 107-second ad on Monday on Twitter. Along with the tweet, Never Back Down noted Trump’s comments featured in its ad: “Despite his 2016 campaign promise to prosecute Hillary Clinton, Trump chose to ‘help her heal’ instead of healing the rule of law. Draining the swamp and locking her up? ‘That plays great before the election,’ he explained. ‘Now we don’t care, right?’”
Trump made those remarks shortly after his major upset win in November 2016.

The ad starts with a video of Trump saying, “The Clintons are criminals. Remember that: they’re criminals.”
It then cuts to one of Trump’s debates with Clinton, in which he directly told the former first lady, U.S. senator and secretary of state that “I’m going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation.”
The ad then features Trump speaking at a rally. As the crowd thunders the familiar “lock her up” chant, Trump said, “Honestly, she should be locked up.”
Trump was referring to Clinton’s secret home-brew computer server, on which she stashed classified materials, including those held as top secret, while serving as the nation’s chief diplomat. Clinton also destroyed evidence.
Yet then-FBI Director James Comey excused Clinton, saying in a July 2016 statement that while she was “extremely careless” in handling “very sensitive, highly classified information,” she likely did not intend to violate the law — even though intent under the law is irrelevant.
In their ad, DeSantis’ supporters showed an MSNBC clip from two weeks after the election that noted Trump had opted against prosecuting Clinton.
The ad closes with clips of Trump at a January 2017 event praising Bill and Hillary Clinton, calling them “good people” and saying, “I have a lot of respect for those two people.”

Ironically, Clinton has not shown the same grace toward Trump.
She has gloated over his several indictments in state and federal cases, including for mishandling classified information. After the indictment for failure to secure classified materials was announced in June by prosecutor Jack Smith, Clinton released merchandise with the brand “But her emails,” to mock how she eluded the justice that Trump promised.
Last week, after Trump was indicted in Georgia, Clinton told MSNBC: “The only satisfaction may be that the system is working, that all of the efforts by Donald Trump, his allies and his enablers to try to silence the truth, to try to undermine democracy have been brought into the light.”
