Alex Murdaugh plead guilty to 22 counts of financial fraud and money laundering is a significant step towards justice for his victims.
It is also a sign that Murdaugh is finally facing the consequences of his actions.
Murdaugh told the judge Thursday he wanted to be held accountable for stealing from his clients and do right by his surviving son.
“I want to take responsibility. I want my son to see me take responsibility. It’s my hope that by taking responsibility that the people I’ve hurt can begin to heal,” said Murdaugh, standing in his orange South Carolina prison jumpsuit.

He will be sentenced at a later date, according to the AP.
Murdaugh, 55, was convicted of two counts of murder in June 2023 and is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole in a South Carolina prison.
He has maintained his innocence since the deaths of his wife and son in June 2021.
