U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.), alongside Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Representatives Chris Smith (R-N.J.), Robert Aderholt (R-Ala.), Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.), and 107 additional members of Congress, has called on the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to investigate federal funding awarded to abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood Federation of America and International Planned Parenthood Federation, over the past three years.

In a bipartisan letter, lawmakers requested updated information on federal funds allocated to Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), Planned Parenthood affiliates, MSI Reproductive Choices, and four domestic abortion providers.

“We are writing to request updated information on federal funding for Federally Qualified Health Centers, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, International Planned Parenthood Federation, MSI Reproductive Choices, and other abortion providers,” the letter stated.

The GAO has previously issued reports on this topic, revealing that the abortion industry received nearly $2 billion in federal taxpayer dollars from fiscal years 2019-2021. Lawmakers emphasized the need for transparency in the allocation of public funds.

“Proper oversight of public funds and programs is crucial for determining the value of the goods and services provided to and funded by American taxpayers,” the letter continued. “The information sought in this inquiry is instrumental for policymakers and the public alike.”

The lawmakers hope the GAO report will shed light on funding levels and enhance transparency as Congress evaluates federal expenditures and considers future funding decisions.

Senator Britt previously cosponsored the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, introduced by Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), which seeks to establish a permanent, government-wide standard to prohibit federal funding for abortions.

Additionally, she has supported efforts to overturn the Department of Veterans Affairs’ rule allowing abortions at VA facilities in states like Alabama, where such procedures are heavily regulated or outlawed.

The request to the GAO underscores lawmakers’ focus on ensuring accountability and transparency in the use of taxpayer dollars. “This report will provide critical insight into funding practices and bolster the public’s understanding of how their tax dollars are being utilized,” the lawmakers said.
