Florida Power & Light (FPL) is seeking approval from the Florida Public Service Commission to recover approximately $1.2 billion from customers to cover costs related to restoring power after hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton, as well as to replenish a storm reserve fund.

If approved, the additional costs would be spread over a 12-month period, starting in January 2025. The average residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month could see their monthly bill increase by around $12.80 in the traditional service area and $8.07 in the Northwest Florida area.

The Public Service Commission is scheduled to review FPL’s request on December 3rd.

Other Florida utilities, including Duke Energy Florida and Tampa Electric Company, have also expressed plans to seek rate increases to cover hurricane-related expenses.
