PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – A 14-day-old infant survived a fatal car crash that happened Saturday around 3:30 PM on Gandy Blvd.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, an SUV was traveling eastbound on Gandy Boulevard North just west of Oak Street Northeast in the left lane, when the front left tire of the SUV separated from the vehicle causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

The SUV traveled left across the median and into the path of a car resulting in a collision between the two vehicles.

Troopers say, upon impact the rear passengers, a 47-year-old grandfather, and a 14-day-old infant, were ejected from the vehicle. The grandfather suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash while the infant, seated in a child seat that was not restrained within the vehicle, suffered minor injuries.

The 22-year-old parents in the car and the driver of the SUV, an 18-year-old man from Tampa, suffered minor injuries. Both vehicles came to rest along the northern shoulder of Gandy Boulevard.
